A ‘Cloud Bob’? Yeah… That’s an Afro

Call it what you want—but let’s not act brand new. An afro is an afro, not a “cloud bob.”
There’s a fine line between trend forecasting and straight-up rebranding, and this definitely feels like the latter.
Let’s be honest—this style is not new. Black people have been wearing, celebrating, and defining this look for generations. So when Vogue presents it with a softer, trend-friendly name, it can feel less like innovation and more like erasure.
Maybe I’m more irritated than I should be, but honestly, it’s the audacity for me. Too often, things created and rooted in Black culture get renamed, repackaged, and suddenly treated like a fresh discovery.
And seeing Tracee Ellis Ross attached to the article definitely made me pause, because representation matters—but so does giving proper credit.
At the end of the day, it’s bigger than hair. It’s about acknowledgment, history, and calling things what they are.
